Frankenstein

review by
Mike Haberfelner

Jasmin's (Jasmin Flores) estranged father (Tom C. Niksson), a successful horror writer, has just died, and Jasmin goes through his things and finds out for his latest, unpublished collection of short stories, he has used a centuries old book of black magic that is supposed to bring his stories to life - quite literally as Jasmin finds out. The stories in question are:

  • It's a zombie outbreak, and like all others, Genny (Denyse Hollis) panics - and she only very slowly comes to the realization that she's actually a zombie and cannot fight her zombie urges ...
  • A couple (Luke Couzens, Camilla Crawford) find their dream home, and all it needs is some fixing up - and since they've run out of money buying the house, they just decide to do it themselves, with little expertise but lots of love - only, they soon have to realize love can only take them so far ...
  • Rich daughter Tiffany (Jordan Flippo) goes on a camping trip with her middle class college friends - which goes well until she accidently shoots dead her boyfriend (Nelson JoaQuin), then has to shoot dead everyone else to cover her tracks ...
  • After Frankenstein (John Paul Fedele) accidently kills his wife (Valerie Bittner), he brings her back to life - again and again, he just never gets it quite right ...

As a fan of old school anthologies and EC Comics, one just cannot help but love this movie, a collection of macabre shorts that favour an old school approach to storytelling - but old school in the best possible way, where build-up, characters and twists still win out over spectacle, and where everything is laced in irony, sometimes more sometimes less apparent. And a genre savvy directorial effort and a spirited cast bring the whole thing to life rather beautifully.
