It's carnival in Munich, and pretty much everybody's celebrating
nonstop, with one masque segueing into the next - and as a result, both
police and private detectives are swamped with missing person reports -
private detectives like notorious womanizer "Monaco" Franz, who
takes this as a perfect excuse to go partying round the clock as well. But
all the partying takes its toll on Franz, and eventually he does down with
the man flu - which is not only a bad thing, as exactly on the day he
falls ill his wife Annette (Ruth-Maria Kubitschek) wanted to take him to a
masque with her friends, friends that bore Franz to death. So instead
Annette goes with an admirer of hers, Dr. Schoenferber (Alexander Hegarth)
- who sees her husbandless evening as a chance for him to get her drunk
and take advantage of the situation. Though technically bed-ridden,
Franz lets his best friend Manni (Karl Obermayr) persuade him to go out
partying - at least a bit. Franz's mind is set though on returning home
before midnight - if only to not be caught out of bed by his wife - until
he crosses paths with Lilly (Michaela May), an old flame of his, who
finally shows receptive and takes him home with her. But once at her
place, Franz has to find out Lilly is with child now and wants Franz as
her sugar daddy. Franz takes a powder, and ultimately returns home at the
not so early hours of the morning, trying to find a good excuse for
Annette - to learn she's not even home yet. And suddenly he's worried
sick. What has happened, after Dr. Schoenferber has gotten her drunk and
she made a scene at the masque, she hijacked Schoenferber's car and gone
to town to party the carnival away. She returns home only on Ash
Wednesday, wearing another outfit and no clear idea where she's been or
what she's done the last few days ... Another fun episode, not
only because of the rather hilarious and timeless brand of humour
associated with the series but also it shows some narrative ingenuity, not
only because the set-up with the missing spouses comes full circle with
the last scene of Annette returning home, but also because there's a bit
of a role reversal, with Annette ultimately outpartying Franz. And while
Ruth-Maria Kubitschek is usually the straight person in the series, she's
rather hilarious in a rare "funny"sequence.
