Metayouu is a film that's pretty much impossible to summarize,
also because it doesn't stick to one particular story, partly seems like a
documentary, partly found footage, but then also features vintage
commercials, cosplay, and even a lengthy yet quite light-hearted cooking
scene, with the only constant being filmmaker Douglas Reese popping up in
most of the clips, sometimes as a documentarian and sometimes as a
character. And that the footage really is in parts absurd, in parts
intentionally mundane and everything in between only adds to the confusion
... ,,, and that's really what's so fascinating about this
film, it's incredibly associative in narrative and thus completely open to
interpretation, and thus works a bit like a cinematic puzzle, while really
tripping though all sorts of pop culture from the last 30 years, causing
associations within oneself just like the movie jumps from one thing to
another, making this weirdly immersive storytelling - and as mentioned
above, the film's quite fascinating at that.
