Frankie (Marc Powers) may be past his prime, but as a hitman he's still
effective and loyal to his boss - but he screwed up one hit, and now his
higher-ups have put a hit on him, which he learns though from Anthony
(Dustin Teuber), a fellow hitman but also his friend. Initially this
enrages Frankie and he wants to fight back, roughing up and/or killing
those he believes behind the hit, then he thinks of revenge, including
selling the mob to a crooked cop (Emily Shaffer) he sometimes makes
dealings with, but ultimately he sees his condition is terminal, and he
tries to tie up at least some of the loose ends of his life, like making
up with his former "girlfriend"/favourite prostitute Akita (Kate
Eppers) or apologizing to the daughter (Samantha Webb) of the one man, a
friend, he didn't want to kill (but did anyway) in his line of duty ... Starting
out as a mob tale in the Martin Scorsese, this half hour short soon
evolves into the much more intimate realm of a character study, giving its
lead character a rounded out personality that goes beyond, sometimes
contradicts gangster movie clichés, ultimately painting a very empathetic
portrait of a basically not very likeable guy. And of course a strong
central performance, with a solid supporting ensemble, as well as a subtle
directorial effort giving lead Marc Powers the room to breathe, help make
this a very cool and unusual genre movie.
