Kyle's (Douglas Reese) life seems to consist solely of eating, sleeping
... and wanking to internet porn. There is room for nothing else here -
which is kind of ironic since he has a cute girlfriend, Kristie (Anna
Bens) who would love nothing more than having sex with him ... at least
once in a while. But the more addicted Kyle becomes to internet porn, the
less he's interested in Kristie - which even goes so far as to him
masturbating to porn right in front of her. Eventually, Kyle comes to the
conclusion that Kristie has to go - has to go the hard way ... which
apparently means killing her. Once he has stabbed Kristie, Kyle comes to
the conclusion that his own life has long ended, he has become an empty
shell long ago - which is why he hangs himself - in front of the backdrop
of some nice porn clip. Loathing is ... well, it's a
nice and creepy and atmospheric short, but on closer inspection, it's also
pretty blunt, as its story is a bit too over-simplified, its characters
are a tad to flat, and it asks its audience to take too much at face value
- which is a bit of a shame because director Douglas Reese has proven in
the past that he can tell stories and develop characters with very limited
means and very little dialogue, but almost naturally, his films need quite
a little more than circa 12 minutes to fully unfold. Still, this is by
no means a trainwreck, it is a nice short, however it falls way
short of what it could have achieved given more time and room ...
