Sharon (Lily Gladstone) is a teacher at a ground school at a
reservation who has long lost her ideological enthusiasm for her job,
these days she's more concerned with keeping the school above the ground,
even if that means stealing toilet paper, soap bars and chocolate from the
local hotel/casino, and she pretty much lives for her cigarette breaks. So
when she sees 9 year old native boy Bear (Julian Ballantyne) having a hard
time, it takes her a while to find the motivation and energy to do the
right thing ... Little Chief isn't a film that's
in-your-face about anything, that tries to drive its message home with a
sledgehammer or announces its agenda from miles away - and that's what
makes the movie so good and compelling, it just tells its story, doesn't
pretend to have any universal answers to the issues shown on film, instead
lets its well-constructed story flow, makes great use of its locations,
and also relies on its competent cast. Well worth a look for sure.
