They might just be the perfect family, mum (Erin O'Brien), dad (Johnny
Alonso), Lindsey (Allison Meister) and young Josh (M.G. Barnes) - and then
mum is killed in a car accident. This hits the whole family hard of
course, but probably none harder than Lindsey, who's 16 and only weeks
away from graduation, and she's not equipped to deal with that right now.
Sure, her father does everything in his power to give her all the love and
strength she needs - but there's only so much he can do, plus he's not
well-equipped to deal with the situation as well. So eventually, Lindsey
joins Pastor John's (Jorge Diaz) self-help group where she meets others
dealing with loss - including Andy (Darius Autry), who soon becomes her
soul mate. Then Lindsey learns that her best friend Katie's (Savannah
Grace Elmer) mother Sara (Danielle J. Bowman) is terminally ill, and Sara
asks Lindsey to record a video of her to give Katie for her graduation.
Sara of course soon dies, and Katie is heart-broken, but when Lindsey
shows her the video, that sure lifts Katie's spirits. And it actually
helps Lindsey to cope with her loss as well. So she figures why not start
a non-profit that records messages by terminally ill people to those they
leave behind, to help them overcome their grief. It sure sounds like a
good idea, but will anyone even ask for services of this nature? And how
will those left behind react to messages from their deceased loved ones
presented by a stranger?
You might be able to tell from above synopsis, this is an
uncompromising tearjerker, and to be quite honest, it's not the best movie
I've ever seen. The two main concerns I have with it are a) that after the
initial conflict, the lead character encounters no more (narrative)
obstacles and seems to be on an upward spiral throughout the movie, and b)
the constant allusions to religion seem to be very out of place, since
this is a film about people helping others through their concrete actions,
not through praying let alone divine intervention. But that said, what the
film does have in abundance is heart, which shines through in almost every
scene, it's carried by a solid ensemble cast, and whatever one might think
of the movie otherwise, it sure is uplifting and leaves one with a warm
feeling in the end.
