Kansas (Dennis Hopper) is a stunt wrangler on a Samuel Fuller-directed
production of a Pat Garrett (Rod Cameron) and Billy the Kid (Dean
Stockwell) movie shot in Peru, a production that really excites all the
locals, and thus they treat all those involved like demi-gods. And Kansas
falls in love with Peru, and especially with local Maria (Stella Garcia),
who's very much into him as well - so when the production breaks camp,
Kansas decides to stay behind as a liaision for other productions that
might come, and he already dreams of all the riches in the world and makes
Maria silly promises ... but the filmpeople just don't come back, having
found out it's cheaper and easier to film in Mexico. Still wanting to come
into money, Kansas hooks up with an US-American broom manufacturer (Roy
Engel) who thinks about investing in the region, and has an almost-affair
with his wife (Julie Adams), and he tries to find gold with Neville (Don
Gordon), who turns out the last person you'd like to go prospecting with.
But even though he's eventually done with the region, the locals are a
long way of being done with Kansas ...
Now when it comes to judging a movie by merely its narrative
merits, The Last Movie is sorely lacking, it's without actual
highlights or even a discernible 3-act structure, its story doesn't lead
anywhere and has no actual resolution - and it's awefully jumpy, ever more
so the deeper we get into it ... and all that makes The Last Movie
quite so great, it's a completely trippy, sometimes surreal and often
immensely funny movie that shows a director at the height of his form, as
he blends impressive imagery with psychological drama, social commentary,
comedy ... and some pretty cool action scenes even, that have a certain
tongue-in-cheek quality to them, which makes them all the better. And
don't beven get me started about the cult cast of this one ... and
frankly, while Easy Rider was cool no doubt, The Last Movie
is the film that Dennis Hopper as a director should be remembered for!
