The Satos live a rather boring life, he (Koji Yakusho) is sound
engineer at a movie studio while his wife Junco (Jun Fubuki) is a part
time waitress. So she decides to spice her life up a bit by becoming a
spiritualist & holding seances, & she soon finds psychology
student Kayahashi (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi) rather interested in her as a
medium. So interested in fact that he can persuade a police officer
(Kitaro) & his professor (Ittoku Kishibe) to ask for her help in a
kidnapping-case. What none of them knows, though, is that the kidnapped
girl has escaped her captor & - while Mr.Sato was at a
sound-recording-trip to Mt Fuji - hidden in one of his boxes he keeps
his equipment in (unbeknowest to even him of course). Later that
evening, Junco has a premonition that leads her to the box, & she
finds the girl who is barely alive. But instead of calling an ambulance
of the authorities, the couple decides to use the girl for a publicity
stunt that would get them some of the fame they longed for after all -
at least, Junco's gift did really find the little girl, didn't
it. So they first place the girl's shoes in an abandoned building &
point the police to the same ... which leaves them baffled. But before
our couple can really land the big coup, the little girl dies for
real, at least patly the fault of the Satos. So the 2 decide to bury
her in a remote forest, but after that is done they are haunted by the
little girl's spirit almost everywhere. They even try to exorcise their
house but to no effect. Finally jHJunco comes up with the idea that
unearthing the girl might help, & she holds another seance with our
psychology student & his professor, telling them the girl's spirit
tells her exactly where she lies - but in fact, Junco only confesses her
own guilt by doing so, the girl was just found and unearthed a few hours
back, & so our souple gets its just reward ... Nice &
creepy little film that is totally devoid of any effects or shocks but
manages to sustain a haunting atmosphere nevertheless. Furthermore one
of the few successful attempts to blend parapsychological phenomena
& psychological facts, here offering a great guilt complex as a
partial explanation for the spooky goings-on.
