Dr. Shirakawa (Teruo Yoshida) has developed a disintegration ray so
terrible that he decides to destroy all his research and put his findings
onto one microfilm hidden somewhere only known to him. Unfortunately, his
assistant Shibata (Yojiro Fujizawa) has other ideas what to do with the
disintegration ray as he's secretly a member of evil organisation Shocker,
and soon enough, Shocker, led by monster of the week Yamogelas (voiced by
Susumu Mizushima), try to abduct the professor, but he's saved by Takeshi
Hongo aka Kamen Rider (Hiroshi Fujioka) and his right hand Ruriko (Chieko
Morikawa). Shirakawa is unwilling though to spill the beans of his
findings even to Kamen Rider and company. Instead, he hides the microfilm
inside a locket he gifts to his sister Machiko (Yayoi Watanabe) - bit
mistake as it turns out as he's been witnessed hiding the microfilm. And
soon enough Machiko is kidnapped and Shocker start to develop the
disintegration ray - but to develop it to the scale where it can shoot
airplanes out of the sky, they need Shirakawa, so they kidnap him and
force him to upscale the ray, threatening to kill his sister. Ruriko
however has found out where Shirakawa was taken and tries to free him -
with moderate success, but then Kamen Rider shows up and despite being
temporarily caught in quick-drying cement (Yamogelas weapon of choice) he
manages to right a few wrongs. But ultimately its up to send Yamogelas to
Kingdom Come with his disintegration ray.
Another episode where titular Kamen Rider actually takes back
seat due to lead actor Hiroshi Fujioka's injury (which would eventually
force him to sit out a large chunk of the series) with another cast
member, this time Chieko Morikawa, taking center stage. This approach is a
bit bumpy at times as the occasional stock footage of Fujioka from earlier
episodes isn't always edited in too smoothly, but mostly it works as
Morikawa gives an engaging performance and is allowed to hold her own for
a bit before Kamen Rider appears pretty much as a deus-ex-machina. The
episode as a whole however is nothing more than average, one gets pretty
much what one expects, but there's no surplus. Nostalgic fun though.
