Ever since Jackie (Helen Hunt) has had an affair with Todd (Sam
Trammell), her family life has gone off track: Sure, her cop husband Greg
(Jon Tenney) does his best to try to forgive her, but isn't 100%
successful, but it's really their son Connor (Judah Lewis) who suffers the
most and has open confrontations with Jackie. It's not really helping that
Greg is doing overtime of late trying to solve a case concerning children
who have been kidnapped and probably murdered of late, which has him put
in many extra hours, also at night. Things come to a head though when Todd
shows up at Jackie's house - and is hit by a mug thrown from inside the
house, probably by Connor. Jackie hides Todd then drives Connor to school,
but when she returns home, she finds Todd murdered, and it might have been
Connor's doing. When she tells Greg, they decide to hide the body as
neither of them wants Connor to go to jail. They don't know it of course,
but the audience does, there's someone else in the house ... Rewind to
the beginning of the story, when Alec (Owen Teague) and Mindy (Libe Barer)
sneak into Greg and Jackie's house to ... really live in the house's
crawlspaces and feed on what they can steal just so much from the fridge
that it doesn't get noticed. For Mindy it is a lifestyle, and she has
lived like that in many a home before, but for Alec is is new territory
and plenty exciting - and he suggests to mess with Greg and family a bit,
which Mindy categorically turns down, as it would risk them being found
out. So ... Alec drugs her to have some fun with the family on his own -
harmless pranks really, nothing serious. Later when Mindy's awake again
and Alec throws a mug out of the window, it hits Todd by mere accident.
Yet later, Mindy witnesses Todd, where Jackie has hid him, being hit over
the head with a shovel - and it's not by Greg. And now they both realize
their situation has gotten really serious ... A very well-made
thriller that combines suspense and tension with well-places jump scares
and is carried above all else by clever storytelling, with the film pretty
much re-inventing itself halfway through without any leaps in logic, yet
many surprises along the way - so much so that the film seems to have
turned onto its head with the resolutions in the finale. Now add to that a
very solid cast, and you've got rather terrific genre entertainment.
