In the not too distant future, earth is gradually depleted of its human
inhabitants, all going to Centauri Proxima B to colonize and start a new
life. But there also those that are left behind, people like Miguel (Nuno
Nolasco), whose fear of water makes him unfit for the journey. And since
then he spends his life between his friend's (Paulo Calatré) restaurant,
a travelling sandwich stand, and the local indoors swimming pool, where he
makes an honest effort to overcome his phobia - but one such attempt leads
to him almost drowning if it wasn't for the help of Eva (Maria Leite), an
independent drifter whom he instantly takes a liking to - and vice versa
so before long she moves in with him, and slowly lures him out of his
shell where his disappointment about being left behind has landed him, and
by the by she teaches him one doesn't have to travel far to get to
somewhere in life ... An odd and oddly melancholic blend of
science fiction and love story by way of social commentary with
philosophical undercurrents, this film admittedly might not be for
everyone due to its deliberately slow pace, many stretches of silence, and
refusal to just explain things away. But if one lets oneself dive into
this movie, one will likely be impressed by the film's atmospheric
approach and poetic cinematic language, all augmented by the reduced
acting of its protagonists on one hand, and many unusual sets and
locations on the other, to make this one cinematic journey that's not easy
to forget.
