After they've botched up a job for their boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes),
two hitmen, seasoned Ken (Brendan Gleeson) and new-to-the-job Ray (Colin
Farrell) have to skip the UK for Bruges, Belgium, to wait for the thing to
blow over. Now Ken's very much ok with this, as the historical part of
Bruges is simply beautiful, and he enjoys being a mere tourist for a
change. Ray on the other hand still hasn't come over what has happened at
that last job - he accidently shot a young boy - and decides to hate
Bruges from the get-go, even more so as he has to share a room with Ken.
However, on the very first night in Bruges, Ray meets lovely Chloe
(Clémence Poésy) and gets her to date him the next evening - however
that date goes horribly wrong as it turns out Chloe and her boyfriend
Eirik (Jérémie Renier) have made it their business to lure tourists into
their flat to rob them blind. Of course, they're amateurs by Ray's
standards, and he doesn't only get out of this unscathed but also manages
to blind Eirik with a gun shooting blanks, but it really damages his ego.
Meanwhile back at their hotel, Ken receives a call from Harry who tells
him to kill Ray - which wrecks Ken as he has come to like the guy.
Ultimately Ken and Harry have a wild night that involves heavy drinking,
tons of cocaine, hookers and a dwarf (Jordan Prentice). The next day, Ken
is about to kill Ray, but instead saves him from killing himself, sits him
in a train to wherever, informs Harry of this and stays to sit out the
consequences - and indeed Harry does come over to Bruges to settle the
score, if not with Ray then with Ken ... but Ray also returns to Bruges,
in handcuffs since he's beaten up a Canadian couple (Zeljko Ivanek,
Stephanie Carey), so everything's set for a bloody finale ... In
Bruges is a very interesting genre mix, taking many of its cues from
gangster cinema, but also mixing in some buddy movie tropes and even
elements of old-fashioned travelogues, while constantly changing its tone
between drama and comedy - and even though the movie feels at times a
little episodic, especially when the travelogue elements kick in, this
blend mostly works because of a cleverly structured script that features
well fleshed-out central characters, strong acting, and a direction that
gets the most out of its locations and still gives the actors their space
to breathe. Now maybe it's not a perfect movie, as at times it falls into
clichés, and some of the jokes seem a bit forced, but it's pretty great
entertainment nevertheless.
