Michigan, somewhen in the 19th century: After his applejack plant went
up in flames, Jean Kayak (Ryland Brickson Cole Tews) finds himself with
literally nothing in the rough winter, and he needs to acquire survival
skills pronto, as not only has he only his wits to relie on, but he also
is up against a family of beavers who sabotage his every move to capture
himself food, find shelter and the like. But with the help of several
figures who have mastered life in the wild, including a beautiful furrier
(Olivia Graves) who will eventually become his love interest, Jean slowly
develops into one North America's greatest fur trappers ... This
film, basically an hommage to silent slapstick filmmaking (there isn't a
single line of dialogue spoken in the whole movie) and Looney Tunes
humour, is basically mad: First and foremost, it doesn't even try to go
for realism, or even something resembling realism, as seen in its slapdash
sets and bargain basement animal costumes - two aspects that actually work
in favour of the movie's absurd overall style. Furthermore, the movie uses
its rather feeble story only as a hanger for its jokes - and not all of
them are in good taste -, but still manages to develop a heart. And
finally, there's a definite touch of surrealism to the whole thing that
makes the film a triplike experience - and as a result also lots of fun.
Not for everyone maybe, but not to miss for those into cinematic insanity
for sure. Hundreds
of Beavers will be in UK & Irish cinemas from 9th July.
