Life certainly hasn't been easy for Isabell (Callie Ott) ever since her
parents have died in a horrible accident, as she and her twin brother
Malcolm (Raymond Creamer) are just too young to handle things on their
own ... and then, while they are clearing out their parents' holiday
retreat, they are attacked by two masked men ... whom they manage to ward
off, but it might (or might not) have cost two of their friends' (Lexi
Moeller, Chris Oliver) lives. Since then, Isabell is in psychiatric care,
and making steady progress thanks to epathic doctor Kristen (Schell M.
Peterson) ... but Malcolm has taken a turn to the worse, as he has now
taken to searching for the mask of the masked man who has gotten away at
the bottom of the lake the cabin is at ... in the deepest of winter, when
the lake's frozen over. Eventually, the siblings drift apart,
apparently, but things really get out of hands when one nicht, Malcolm
shows up at Kristen's door to ask about the whereabouts of his sister -
and his attitudes hints he might be looking for more than just information
... Now The Horror most certainly is not an easy movie,
as it will leave one at least somewhat creeped out with one having no
distinct idea why because ... the film is just really good in covering its
tracks - and that's exactly why it works so well, it leaves many things to
the imagination instead of explaining them away in a painstaking process,
it is intentionally open to interpretation, and it won't even tell one
where reality ends and imagination (your own as well as its characters)
begins. But that all of this works is of course due to very involving
performances, great direction and camerawork (helped by just the right
locations of course), and just simply clever (and cleverly structured)
storytelling. Very solid genre entertainment!
