Weird things are going on at a New York hospital, including a young man
ripped apart by chains that seem to come out of nowhere - so reporter Joey
(Terry Farrell) decides to investigate ... and soon she has tracked down a
homeless goth girl, Terri (Paula Marshall) who has helped selling a
certain statue to sleazy clubowner J.P. (Kevin Bernhardt) - and of course,
the statue has everything to do with it since it holds Pinhead
(Doug Bradley) and his Cenobitesprisoner , who desperately want to break out ...
and soon enough, they have persuaded J.P. to help them ...
Joey and Terri meanwhile become good friends and Joey even allows the
girl to live in her appartment - until Terri learns that Joey will leave
for Monterey soon, feels betrayed, and goes to J.P., her former lover -
but he now wants to feed her to the statue to free the Cenobites. Thing
is, Terri is smarter than she looks, sacrifices J.P. instead, makes a deal
with Pinhead and ...
Joey meanwhile has a recurring nightmare, that about her father (Peter
G.'Boynton) dying in Vietnam, only this time something new has been
added: Captain Elliot Spencer (Doug Bradley), Pinhead's former human form,
who warns her that the Cenobites want to take over the world and tells her
she can only stop them with the puzzlebox that is currently in her
possession ...
Soon enough, Joey arrives at J.P.'s club to face Pinhead, but there,
she finds the guests slaughtered or turned into Cenobites, and of course
Pinhead knows she has the puzzlebox and wants to destroy it as it's the
only thing that can send him back to hell - and suddenly, Joey, who has
come boldly, finds herself on the run ...
With Hellraiser 3, the Hellraiser series has
left the UK and gone to the USA - and has in the process become more
routine horror fare, with the actual perversity of the previous two movies
pretty much gone and the inventiveness of the first two movies replaced by
the exploration of an already established world. That said, if you choose
not to compare Hellraiser 3 with the first Hellraiser
or Hellbound but view it as a
solid genre entry, it works just fine, it's nicely directed, solidly
acted, the characters are either likeable or lovably hateable, and despite
the occasional shortcomings, the film as a whole is maybe not terribly
inventive but well-written with suspense, shocks and gore in all the right
places. Horror fun, no less, for sure.
