Scout Hawkeye (John Hart), & his Indian friend Chingachgook (Lon
Chaney jr) find 2 Delawares tied up & killed, bzut when they report it
to major Tilton (Earl Grey) in the next fort, he thinks it might be
retribution for some Delaware attacks having happened in the lasst few
days ... which Hawkeye & Chingachgook can't believe since the
Delawares are a peaceful tribe - but Tilton has a witness to substantiate
the claims, Stanwell (William Walker). Only, he is a bit too eager to
blame the Delawares ...
But when Hawkeye & Chingachgook arrive at the Delawares' camp, they
find them in warpaint, wanting retribution for their 2 killed braves.
Hawkeye however can broker a deal that the Delawares give hiom 7 days to
find the real culprits ...
... & when the 2 friends secretly follow Stanwell around they see
he has dealings with unscrupulous landgrabber Johnson (Pawys Thomas) &
Indian agent Blaisdell (Glynn Morris), & the 3 of them want the
Delawares driven from the land by legal means so Johnson can grab it. Soon
Hawkeye & Chingachgook also learn that Stanwell plans to attack a
neighbouring village with his gang in Delaware warpaint, so the Delawares
will really appear as savages to the army ... but our heroes capture one
of Stanwell's men, & while Chingachgook brings the man back to major
Tilton as a witness, Hawkeye infiltrates the Stanwell-gang,
disguised as one of them. He is found out, but before he can be killed,
the army seize the gang. Only Stanwell gets away to be chased down by
Hawkeye.
In the end, there is peace between the Delawares & the settlers
again.
Rather dull affair of a Western, with Lon Chaney jr, visibly marked by
alcoholism, in a typical has-been supporting role.
