For teenaged Lex (Savannah Lee May), dancing is everything, and she's
got both the talent and determination for it too to one day become a world
class dancer. But then her mother (Maria Canals-Barrera) has to move from
Detroit to LA for job reasons and can no longer afford her dance classes.
But she gets a job on the side coaching of all people her little sister
Kerri's (Ava Whitworth) dance troupe - and actually leads them to win a
highly remunerated dance competition. Eventually, her dancing attracts the
attention of Skyla (Laura Krystine), a highly competitive dancer who
invites Lex to join her dance troupe. She's over the moon of course, and
to top it off, she falls in love with one of the dancers, Travis (Gunner
Burkhardt). And this is where the problems start, because Skyla had an eye
on Travis as well, without ever telling him of course, and since he's
leaning much more towards Lex, Skyla not only leaves the team, taking two
teammembers with her, she was also the sole financial supporter of the
team, and without her the group can't afford the rent for their dance
studio anymore. And they can't afford the entry fee for a dance
competition that would mean the world to them ... Now of course
this is a film aimed first and foremost at the tween and teen crowd, so
it's a little predictable and of course works towards its happy ending
from square one. But for what it is the film's actually pretty good, its
dance scenes are well performed, beautifully filmed and interestingly
edited and not too dragged out to brting the story to a halt, its
characters are pretty well fleshed out and thus relatable, and Savannah
Lee May carries the film rather well, surrounded by an able ensemble. So
in all, the movie should do pretty well with its core audience, but it's
also a pleasant watch if the topic as such doesn't really speak to one.
