A small group of documentary filmmakers revolving around director Eric
(Mark Huberman) and host Bruce (Julian Sands) wants to launch a new ghost
watch style show visiting the most haunted places of Europe, and for their
pilot they have chosen a hotel in Cyprus that has been abandoned for
decades now, ever since the owners poisoned all their guests and then
committed suicide. Now the hotel, owned by Frank (Anthony Skordi) and
Rosemary (Maria Ioannou), who seem to be constantly around, sure is an
impressive and impressively moody building, which soon gets under the skin
of the crew, consisting of line producer Anna (Kristina Godunova),
camerawoman Jennifer (Flavia Watson), soundgirl Christine (Elva Trill), as
well as Eric's estranged wife Sofia (Marianna Rosset), but at first it's
really only the usual tension expected on a filmset, like Bruce being a
sleazy old man trying to get into the panties of all the female
crewmembers, and him and Eric not agreeing on the direction the show is to
take, while the shoot does nothing to bridge the gap between Eric and
Sofia. But then Anna finds out something about the hotel - but is brutally
murdered before she can tell, and her body's removed before anyone notices
she's gone even. Christine and Jennifer eventually make an excursion to
the basement to investigate some weird noises - a basement Christine's
never to leave. And when Eric and Jennifer go looking for her, they
unwittingly unleash pandemonium ...
An atmosphere-heavy horror thriller of the haunted-hotel
variety that of course takes a few cues from The
Shining (but truth to be told, hasn't every hotel horror flick
since that movie's release?), and also from Dario Argento's Suspiria
and Inferno, while some murder
setpieces would have done honour to any giallo of old stylistically - but
that's not to say that The Ghosts of Monday is nothing but a rehash
from any number of shockers of old, as the film has enough substance to
stand on its own, an engaging story, fleshed out and interesting
characters played by a solid cast, and even its very own anthology - all
serving to carry an in the best sense of the word old school shocker
that's almost sure to hit the right chord with genre fans.
