Scott's (Jon Weinberg) friend has died from cancer way too early in
life, and even though their mutual friend Chris (Tygh Runyan) tries
everything to push him to go to the funeral, Scott refuses, claiming he
needs to live life to the fullest as he, too, may have cancer. Chris
believes neither, as Scott's not the guy to let his hair down, and he has
always a bit of a hypochondriac to begin with, so his "melanom"
might just be a mole, the lump on his nutsack a figment of imagination.
But Scott at least tries to turn his life around, as he quits his job,
tries to buy a new home and to make up with an ex (Rahnuma Panthaky), he
almost succeeds in cheating his way into a recording studio to record some
music, actually does have pity sex with a gorgeous waitress (Sarah Adina),
and really has his lump on his balls looked on by anyone but a real doctor
...
Now most of us probably don't find funerals very funny, and
getting out of one for essentially selfish reasons even less - but Funeral
Day really has the dark comedy side of things down, giving a humourous
treatment to an essentially very serious topic that does not shy away from
profound bits but also at times rather broad humour, instead more than
once manages to blend them quite perfectly, without ever going pure
moronic though. Basically, it's a film where you might laugh at all the
wrong things for all the right reasons, thanks to a clever script, solid
direction, and a strong cast.
