Over the decades, the A
Nightmare on Elm Street-series has become a big favourite with
horror fans, with Wes Craven's original
movie and part three (Dream
Warriors) resonating especially well with audiences - so it's no
big surprise that a rather massive fandom has developed around the
franchise, and the series' stars, first and foremost of course Freddy
Krueger Robert Englund and Heather Langenkamp, his nemesis in A
Nightmare on Elm Street, Dream
Warriors and New Nightmare,
have become genre icons and are more than welcome guests at all horror
conventions, as well as cosplayer favourites. And part of the film shows
the fun goings-on at conventions, some of the favourite cosplayers, and
their over-the-top outfits ... ... and this sure is fun to
watch, but it's really the other part of the movie that strikes a chord,
makes it more than just a fan video, which is basically the story about
the filmmakers Paige Troxell and Kim Gunziger and their small circle of
friends (Jeremy Todd Morehead, Diandra Lazor, Anthony Brownlee) who have
first bonded at horror cons over Freddy,
and for many of whom these are their most meaningful, if not their first
really meaningful, friendships, as even though they're from all walks of
life, their love for A
Nightmare on Elm Street has set them somewhat apart from their
peers (including being bullied, having suicidal tendencies and the like),
and it's often at horror conventions they have experienced they belonged
for the very first time. And that's a sentiment many of us whose tastes
are not exactly mainstream can probably readily relate to, as well as to
the love almost generally shown at horror-related events, where the
sentiments of the fans couldn't be farther from the carnage shown on
screen. So in a way, this movie about a particular strain of horror fandom
is the most heart-warming film I've seen in quite some time.
