He (Chase Bloomquist) is a ninja style assassin working for a top
secret (and slightly shady) gouvernment agency. Being cold-blooded and
always on target - and a perfect fighting machine of course - has him at
the top of his game ... and then his neighbour (Emily Sweet) shows up on
his doorstep and is just - friendly. Plus she has this three steps program
to make herself a better person. And her unrepressed friendliness touches
something inside our assassin, and he starts to ask himself what would his
5 year old self think of him would he see him now - and the answer is, not
very much. Especially once he's ordered to kill a woman who has found a
cure for malaria for reasons that sound too phony and cruel even for the
most accepting of ears - and yet, our (anti-)hero does the job without
fail. But when he's asked to kill the young son of a politician in order
to put fear in him, that's really taking things too far. But the
organisation he works for isn't one one quits all that easily ... This
film has it all to be the perfect hommage to 1980's Cannon
action flicks: Ninjas, martial arts, over-the-top violence, the occasional
bare boob, all done with a fitting macho attitude. And the direction
really captures the look and feel of these movies of old, as does the
well-conceived and mostly practical stunt and effect work. And yet, this
is more than just a mindless throwback flick, there are actually traits of
existential drama woven into the on-screen happenings, the subplot about
the hero trying to find himself and his place in the world, and coming to
the harrowing conclusion he's not at all where he ought to be. And
amazingly enough, thanks of course to a clever script and solid direction,
these two rather opposed narrative threads work with one another like a
charm. Well worth a look for sure.
