While Desmond (Norman Beaton) spends all his days looking after his
barbershop and dreaming of a career as trumpeteer, his wife Shirley
(Carmen Munroe) feels
a little emptiness looking after her husband and children (Kim Walker,
Justin Pickett), having pretty much given up her education and career for
being a good housewife. So upon the advice of a friend (Nimmy March), she
takes up French lessons. And it doesn't take long before Desmond (falsely)
suspects of her cheating on him ... Now this is a series that
didn't age particularly well. Basically it's clearly a child of the 1980s,
with some of the humour being just a bit too specific for the era, and
some similarities to The Cosby Show are a bit too obvious,
while much of the representation of black living is at least from today's
point of view terribly clichéed. On the plus side though, Norman Beaton
and Carmen Munroe are pretty good in their roles and do have chemistry,
and once the humour isn't too topical, there are some good laughs in
there. Not great, but some fun at least.
