Matt (Josh Mitchell), Erika (Carolyn Vasko), Garrett (John Curley) and
Missy (Aida King), four musicians and friends, are on their way to Palm
Springs and the Coachella music festival in a rented van with driver (Arno
Nurmisto) - but the trip seems to be doomed from the start as Matt and
Erika were once a couple and split up over his infidelity, but neither has
ever come over their relationship, emotionally, and the situation isn't at
all helped by Garret, who's a vulgar loudmouth lacking empathy. An almost
crash and a wacko stick up later they arrive in one piece at their
destination - when some harmless peanut shells make things turn ... to the
better or worse, you decide. Desert Drive is a very
sweet (if sometimes vulgar in its humour) comedy in which writer/director
Josh Mitchell mostly does what he does best: Play with words - hardly a
punchline is not some sort of wordplay or innuendo, and several exchanges,
even if they might not always come across as wholly natural, are very
accomplished pieces of writing. To the well-crafted oneliners and dialogue
the story actually takes backseat and is actually a little on the weak
side - but that really hardly matters as the film is really good fun while
watching and flows at a good pace.
