James (Michael Paone), Kat (Jennifer Agatte), Brian (Dustin Teuber) and
Sherrie (Stephanie Falciano) have all gone to film school together, but
neither of them have ever been "given their big break", so
they've gradually all given up on their vocation - and nowadays they just
meet for bad movie night ever so often to have a few beers and make snarky
comments on whatever not-so-good movie they're watching - just to feel
better about themselves. And tonight they're meeting at James', only
tonight is special as Brian is bringing his new girlfriend, Julie
(Dominique Alessi), a newbie to the group who doesn't really understand
the concept of bad-movie-night - but who's sure to make things awkward as
she's the ex of someone else in the circle of friends, and on top of that,
she's actually, albeit briefly, in the movie they're watching, meaning she
as a non film person is the only one who has actually ever made it to a
movie set ... Basically it's a movie about nothing much - and
it's also a film that hits right home, especially with movie lovers and
those with aspirations to work in the industry, because it just feels so
real - and is pretty hilarious at the same time. And this all is achieved
by a clever script that doesn't always go for cheap punchlines but puts
its emphasis on storytelling, that features flawed but relatable
characters and utterly believable situations. And a solid cast who're in
on the joke but play it straicht, and a suitably subtle direction of
course also help to make this work - with pretty hilarious results.
