A not-too-distant future: The virus is still roaming the neighbourhood,
in fact, all neighbourhoods, and staying within your home has become
mandatory, with the almighty Central Authority having taken over
from local gouvernments to see that the lockdown is upheld. In a time like
this, entertainment has of course become a key resource, and since there's
no other way than stream one's content from home, vloggers have become the
new superstars. But the Central Authority has put a sort-of quality
control on all live-streamers: They may be on the air as long as their
shows' audiences amount to more than 50 million viewers, if they fall
below that benchmark, they're not only cancelled - but also killed! So
framed by Chariti Case's (Kristin West) news show, they all battle it out,
from sex "experts" (Lachelle Allen) to right-wing
"patriots" (Jake Red), work-out coaches (Charles Chudabala) to
chefs (Armin Nasseri), plant psychics (Narlyia Sterling) to cam girls
(Candice Collins), gold-digging trophy wives (Betsy Johnson) to
money-grabbing men of God (Rodney Damon Collins), with even a
dysfunctional homicidal family (Dana Olita, Lauren DeLeon, Rory Ogden) and
a musical production (featuring Jimmyo and April Monique Burril) thrown in
for good measure - and none of them are safe from being terminated ... Now
in many ways, The Central Authority is of course a child of its
very special times, when actual film sets have become a rarity and
film-at-home the new norm - this resulting in not the highest production
values, somewhat uneven quality, and an episodic feel to the thing as a
whole. But The Central Authority makes a virtue out of all of this
by playing up the absurd aspects of the situation and rolling the whole
thing into what's best described as entertainment satire - with pretty
much all the segments delivering some giggles and some being hilarious,
making this a fun watch with some food for thought on the side.
