Blood Was Everywhere invites us to a small, working class
Massachusetts community where everyone knows everyone, and not always to
everyone's advantage: There's Angela (Ashley Arnold), barmaid at the local
bar who's really fed up with her junkie-brother Kevin's (Phillip Ristaino)
shenanigans, since he has the talent to tear everybody down with him - but
he also knows where to get the best dope. There's drugpusher Nathan (Larry
Holden), who tries to act like a bigshot kingpin, but never can wholly
hide that he's actually a pretty decent guy, to the point where his
girlfriend (Vanessa Leigh) calls him "Boo". There's Kevin's
friend Jack (Adam Morey), who's out on probation - and against better
judgment he helps trouble magnet Kevin out time and again. There's
Angela's husband Kyle (John Westcott), who's a really nice guy ... but
also a bit too much of a pushover to "take care of things".
There's Angela's best friend Jess (Kimberly Simone), who constantly
complains that her ex Rick (Neal Howland) is staliking her - but the two
have made up quite so often in the past that nobody can really blame Rick
for hoping that it might happen yet again. Apart from that, there's
also an anonymous serial killer in town who by the by kills all the
protagonists ... and the only lead to him might be an autistic girl (Popi
Kapiris) - but when she tries to get the message across, nor even her mum
(Sherrie Lemire) understands what she's talking about ... While
rather obviously influenced by slasher movies from the 1970s and 80s, and
totally delivering on the gruesome murder side of things (though leaving
much of the actual gruesomeness to "what you don't see"), Blood
Was Everywhere takes a radically different, bold, and actually very
rewarding approach to things, as rather than throw a bunch of people into
one single situation where they are slaughtered one by one in a
cannon-fodder sort of way, Blood Was Everywhere allows itself the
luxury to fall apart into subplots to properly introduce its characters
and reveal their hidden eccentricities, secrets, whatever, and even
features a lengthy flashback to fill us in on backstories of the
characters, many of them dead in the here and now already. That all of
this works though is not only thanks to clever writing but also to a
really good ensemble cast and a suitably subtle directorial effort. Really
something different, and well worth a watch!
