It all starts with Sid (Sidney James) complaining to his wife Jean
(Diana Coupland) that he can't use the bathroom because his son Mike
(Robin Stewart) has been in there for an hour, and soon he gets himself
into a rant suggesting Mike might be gay because he has never brought
"a bird" home. And he thinks it's a good idea hooking him up
with that hot girl from office (Gay Soper). Then he finds out his daughter
Sally (Sally Geeson) wears a padded bra, and now he complains about her
being too young for this (at 16), and when he finds pills (never mind that
they're just headache pills) in her possession, he suspects the worst (as
in contraceptive pills), leaving it to Jean to sort everything out before
he makes a complete mess of things ... Now ok, based on story
alone, this first episode of Bless This House had little new to
tell, even by 1971 standards, but what really makes it, besides very funny
writing that is, are the top level performances by all involved, who not
only play it for the laughs but who give their characters character, make
them likeable and relatable despite or even for their flaws. Fun TV,
really, and not only seen through the perspective of nostalgia (though it
sure helps).
