Travelling cross-country, Astrid (Sylvie Tonarelli) and Tristan (Adrien
Malvoisin) are spending the night in a cabin in the middle of nowhere,
France, and they're actually a little ill at ease spending the night at
the strange house, and not only because their new neighbour, Loup (Thomas
Lesserteur), proves to be a bit of a nutjob. However, who they really
ought to worry about are Ma (Emmanuelle Escourrou), Charlot (Fabien Hintenoch) and Jeanne (Capucine Lamarque), three hardcore hermits who,
without their knowledge, live in Astrid and Tristan's basement, and
they're not exactly happy about the newcomers - so much so that they make
their way upstairs to tie up and torture Tristan and Astrid, and
eventually kill them, too. And they would have succeeded as well if it
wasn't for weirdo Loup's interference which somewhat levels the odds in
favour of Astrid and Tristan. But still, they're up against a trio of
determined sadists with weapons, a situation they most certainly didn't
come prepared for ...
Now The Hermits doesn't exactly re-invent the home
invasion thriller genre - but what it does it does very well, and that's
providing the audience with an equally entertaining and nerve-racking
suspense piece that has all the tension, the jump scares and the outbursts
of violence in all the right places and that moves along at a swift enough
space to keep one at the edge of one's seat throughout. And that the whole
thing is carried by a competent, relatable ensemble cast of course helps
to make this one pretty awesome genre entertainment.
