Uzuki (Takako Mazu) has just arrived in Tokyo from rural Hokkaido to
stucdy at the university, but even moving in is a bit of a problem, since
she has brought way more furniture than her appartment can take ...
At the university, Uzuki has at first difficulties to fit in, as she's
not too used to the urbane manner of her fellow students, & since she
knows nothing better to do, she lets herself be persuaded by one of the
few friends she has to join a fly-fishing club ... & most of the
club's activities involve practicing fishing on dry land.
The reason of why she has come to Tokyo we don't find out until the
very end ... Uzuki's (unrequitted) highschool crush Amasaki (Seiichi
Tanabe) has moved to Tokyo a year ago & has started working at a
bookstore that Uzuki now visits regularly ... & finally she manages to
meet him in the story, & after some time he even seems to (vaguely)
remember her. & despite the fact that it is raining & she has a
broken umbrella, Uzuki couldn't be happier.
Not much happens in this movie (even though it's only 67 minutes
short), & everything that happens is pretty unspectacular ... yet
April Story is a great, very entertaining film, because director
Shunjo Iwai knows how to turn daily routines into entertainment (much like
Eric Rohmer in his best films), & make a simple almost-love-story into
an uncheesy original & highly accessible work of art.
