On his way to try and capture his arch nemesis Bly (Billy Drago) in a
small western town, Brisco (Bruce Campbell) happens upon two hoodlums
holding up an old man, professor Ogden Coles (Brandon Maggart), and being
the boundy hunter that he is, he of course takes them captive to drop them
off at the next Sheriff's office - where the deputy (Robert Picardo)
arrests Brisco and the professor instead of the assailants. And once in,
Brisco also meets fellow bounty hunter Lord Bowler (Julius Carry), who's
also after Bly. Brisco, the professor and Bowler's luck seems to turn
though when it turns out the local sheriff is Brisco's childhood friend
Donovan (Pat Skipper), who promptly releases all three of them - only to
later reveal that he's actually in league with Bly, and Bly's more than
happy to kill Brisco by throwing him into a well - something Brisco
escapes by mistake rather than design. Brisco confronts Bly, but in the
process is fatally wounded by Donovan. Bly has also found out that the
professor actually carries "the orb", the otherworldly,
supernatural thing he's after, but the professor throws him off the scent
and uses the orb to pretty much bring back Brisco from death's door, thus
allowing him to have a final stand off with Donovan ... So ok,
there are a few instances in this one that ask the audience to suspend
disbelief a little too far - but that said, this is a pretty solid episode
of the series, pleasantly reminiscent of B-westerns of the 1930s, with a
gothic touch to things. And once again, Bruce Campbell makes a likeable
hero, and one just can't but love the portrayal of his relationship with
friend/competition Lord Bowler, something that's good for quite a few
chuckles for sure.
