All Brisco (Bruce Campbell) wanted to do was to pay a visit to an old
frend of his, Matt Carter (Edward Blatchford) - but pretty much upon his
arrival, Matt is arrested for murder. And the local sheriff isn't too
peculiar in regards to what will happen to his captive either, being not
all that impartial to a necktie party. But Matt is clever enough to name
Brisco his lawyer - after all, Brisco has studied law in Harvard -, so
Brisco pretty much forces a trial into being. And with most of the town
against them, Brisco and his associate Socrates Poole (Christian
Clemenson) investigate and soon find out the murder victim had no more
than a month to live, a fact not lost on Matt, so murdering him would make
little sense. The victim also was a pretty evil man who had employed Matt
to study hoof-and-mouth disease, a condition pretty rare in this strip of
land, but he secretly infected she sheriff's cattle with it to in a
roundabout way force him to sell his land to him. Brisco and Poole also
find out that Matt had an affair with the victim's wife (Carol Huston) -
but then, with the help of back when revolutionary discovery of
fingerprints, Brisco can prove that the victim actually shot himself to go
out in style and have his revenge on all those who wronged him, and that
it was Matt's own assistant (Jensen Daggett), who, furious with jealousy
that Matt chose the dead man's wife over her, made it look like murder ... Now
while it's of course in the premise of the show that Brisco is actually a
Harvard educated lawyer who has just chosen life on the range over what he
has studied, the idea of Brisco in court still sits rather ill with the
overall concept of the series that promises more action and adventure than
courtroom talk. On top of that, the plot of this episode seems rather
over-convoluted and far-fetched and lacks the playfulness of the series as
a whole. That said, this isn't a total failure, the episode tells its
story with a twinkle in the eye, the acting's pretty solid and Bruce
Campbell and Christian Clemenson make an amusing duo, it's just an episode
that doesn't live up to the show's standard as a whole.
