Chloe (Morgan Shaley Renew) has been a filmmaker all her life - making
mostly direct-to-video drivel with titles like "Spacebabes".
Then she finds out she has brain cancer, and the doctors give her at best
6 months to live. So she wants to make one last movie to be remembered by,
one movie that's not dictated by formula and/or the distributor's needs.
But things soon spin out of control as the sets are not finished on time,
the effects crew isn't up for the job, and the woman who has been her
producer on all her movies so far (Wendy Milkos) pretty much sabotages her
efforts. The film Chloe's so desperate make is a horror western about a
gunwoman (Caylin Brooke Sams) on her quest to find a certain magic tree,
and it somehow mirrors Chloe's own quest for respectability as a
filmmakers. Thing is, the magic tree is real - and it eats people ...
Acorn is a pretty unique film inasmuch as it blends
drama with irony, horror with western, and (at least) to everyone who has
ever made a movie this also feels very much like a slice-of-life story.
And through all of this, the movie remains pretty relatable, thanks to a
very clever script, a subtle directorial effort, and a very competent
cast, all making this one unusual but certainly very enjoyable ride.
