Teenaged Abigail (Ava Cantrell) and her mother (Hermione Lynch) move to
a new town somewhere in the rural US to start anew, and it doesn't take
Abigail long to befriend the neighbour boy Lucas (Tren Reed-Brown), an
introvert by nature, but she makes him warm up to her. However, she's
shocked how he lets himself being bullied by everyone, from his mother
(Karimah Westbrook) to the high school jock Daniel (Trace Talbot) - the
latter of whom she actually beats up for Lucas's sake. Thing is, she
doesn't stop there, she eventually ties him up and strangles him to death
while Lucas can only watch in utter shock. But shocked as he is. Lucas
soon realizes to stick with Abigail is his best option - and thiugs go
violently out of bounds from there ...
Horror films about psychopathic serialkillers are of course a
dime a dozen, but it's rather rare for these films to take the side of the
killer, much less rationalize their deeds, and yet rarer to be totally
entertaining, even light-footed doing so - and Abigail is exactly
such a film, where a coming-of-age story is neatly woven into a violent
tale of murder, a tale that weirdly enough also has a lot of heart. And a
clever script that manages to surprise until the very last, a solid
directorial job and Ava Cantrell as an impressive lead really make this
one work, turning in a piece of really cool genre entertainment.
