Your new movie Das
Geheimnis der Teufelspilze - in a few words, what is it about, and
what can you tell us about your character in it?
It's about a couple of idiots tripping out on an overdose of magic
mushrooms. Afterwards they can't remember their trip anymore, but one of
them had his camera on him by coincidence and has recorded everything.
Watching this recording, they're at times shocked but at times also
aroused. I play one of these guys.
What did you draw upon to bring your character to life, and how
much of Jim Aal can we find in Jim? I didn't need much
preparation as I always play myself in some way, a part of me is always
the root of the character, just blown up to abstract proportions. How did you get
involved with the project in the first place? My good
friend Rob Ceus (Belgian filmmaker) told me he wants to make an anthology
of shorts about different states of intoxication and asked me if I wanted
to contribute a segment. So one beery evening I talked about it to my mate
Sebastian Zeglarski [Sebastian
Zeglarski interview - click here], and in subsequent meetings
we came up with more and more absurd ideas for it. One of these meetings
was also attended by Master W [Master
W interview - click here], and we decided to launch the
project together. Do
talk about Das
Geheimnis der Teufelspilze's directors Sebastian Zeglarski and
Master W, and what was your collaboration like?
I've known these two for a while now and we've made some movies
together before, and we're also good friends privately. Our collaboration
during the shoot of Das
Geheimnis der Teufelspilze was pretty much the usual, an
ultimately functioning blend of misunderstandings, rage, hate and laughter
- and lots and lots of love. Das
Geheimnis der Teufelspilze wasn't the first time you've worked
with either Sebastian Zeglarski or Master W - so do talk about your
previous collaborations, and how have you first met them even? Well,
it started back in 2011, when I read a Facebook post by Sebastian that he
needed extras for a trash movie (Gehacktes). I answered that call,
and we got to know one another. Sebastian had already known Master W
beforehands, and he was looking for actors for Der
König der Kannibalen, so one thing led to another and we have
since worked together on quite a few movies and are friends to this day. Back
to Das
Geheimnis der Teufelspilze - what can you tell us about the shoot
as such, and the on-set atmosphere? It was a three day
shoot marathon in February, during the exterior scenes it was ice cold. As
we shot with only a small cast and crew the atmosphere was very amicable -
but we were still all happy when everything was in the box. Any future projects
you'd like to share? No.
What got you into acting in the
first place, and did you receive any formal education on the subject? No
education, I just do it for the fun of it. Ultimately it's just a hobby
for me.
What
can you tell us about your filmwork prior to Das
Geheimnis der Teufelspilze? Quite a few films with
Sebastian (Gehacktes, Zombiercalypse,
Violent Obsession), stuff with P.S.Y.C.H.O.
Productions (Der
König der Kannibalen, Nocta,
Das
Geheimnis der Teufelspilze), an unforgettable shoot with Olaf
Ittenbach (5 Seasons) and a film with Brandl Pictures (Age of
Genesis). Actors (and indeed actresses) who
inspire you? Dieter Krebs. Your favourite movies? Everything
that qualifies as fantastique (sci-fi, horror), preferably pretty
gory of course.
