Pursuing master criminal Rolex, Agent 999 (Norman Chu) stumbles upon another
thief (Han Kwok-Choi) whom he initially takes for Roles, & then, in pursuit
he comes into a town where the inhabitants prove to be cannibals only waiting
for strangers to set foot into their town so they can share their flesh between
them - & the police chief (Eddy Ko) is the leader of the pack.
But Agent 999 doesn't know that & trusts the chief without reservations,
gladly going to the slaughterhouse when the chief tells him Rolex might be
there ... & only just escaping being massacred by the village's (many)
butchers, thanks to his superior martial arts skills - and thanks to beautiful
Eileen, who nurses him back to health after he has hurt himself geting away,
& who has just one flaw ... she's also the police chief's girlfriend.
Still 999 is too caught up in his mission to realize what's going on so he
takes the many buchers he escaped for assassins Rolex sent to kill him ...
The real Rolex (Melvin Wong) meanwhile has long left his criminal past
behind & is working as the chief's aide ... & he's the only one
disgusted by the villagers' cannibalism & ios the only one hoping that
authority (in this case Agent 999) will put an end to it. But when he tells
that Agent 999, the agent thinks it's only a trick to distract him & won't
believe a word, only trying even harder to defeat the man who might be his only
ally ... & this time with the aid of the police chief who has realised
Rolex is a traitor to his cannibalistic cause.
Rolex is soon killed by the chief & his men & his flesh divided
among the city, but not before he could set a spark of honour & rebellion
in the thief, who has somehow managed to stay alive in the village.
& the Thief will play a vital role in freeing Agent 999 when he's
finally captured & tied up by the villagers & it dawns upon him what's
really going on.
But there's even more to fight for, as Eileen has since been made a prisoner
as well, & her underling brother forces them to free her in exchange for a
raft for the getaway.
In the final fight our heroes use the cannibalism of the villagers against
them when they offer them the meat of the big whore they have accidently
killed& they fight using all sorts of martial arts, fire crackers &
even roller-skates. Of course they win, & kill the police chief - who will
probably end up in the bellies of his underlings) -, & they esccape on the
raft that Eileen's brother has provided ... but Eileen doesn't seem to have
shaken off her cannibalistic urges.
One of the funniest of the Hong Kong-horror-martial arts-comedies that were
so popular in the early 1980's, this one is a great blend of perfectly
choreographed Kung Fu, sufficient gore and a story that is absurd enough to not
have to rely much on second rate slapstick. A very atmospheric & dynamic
direction also contributes to that effect.
