When he was a mere 6 years old, Max (played by Fletcher Hammond
as a kid, by Jared Korotkin as a teen) only wanted to prove that Santa
Claus actually existed - but the contraption he built to do just that
accidently killed Santa (the real one), and since then Christmas has
become a loveless holiday. Max back when had the good sense to hide the
body, but has felt guilt ever since - until now, 12 years later, he and
his best friend Paige (Ophelia Rivera), have managed to revive a dead rat
in a science experiment in their school, which gives Max an idea. So he
steals a body from the local morgue, implants Santa's brain (which he has
conveniently kept in a jar all those years) into the body, and with a bit
of electricity (well, a lot of it), Santa comes back to life. Just now,
Santa (Michael Vitovich) is evil and sets out to kill all on his naughty
list. And of course it's not long before Santa finds a house of partying
teens to wreak havoc in, and all of Max's attempts to reign Santa in are
thwarted by a zealous morgue assistant who recognizes Max as the body
snatcher but has no idea what he goes up against when going after evil
Santa whom he perceives to be '"his" body ... Ok, Santastein
might be as silly as its title suggests, and exactly about what the title
suggests, but the film is well aware of its own ridiculousness and has no
reservation when it comes to poke fun at itself and its slightly crazy
subject. And fun is really what the film's about that's in equal parts
teen comedy reminiscent of John Hughes teen flicks with a more comedic
edge and slasher movie, with plenty of allusions to vintage Frankenstein
movies thrown in for good measure. And since the film mostly stays clear
of the merely moronic, uses plenty of clichés in a self-ironic way and
respects its horror roots, this is quite simply pretty hilarious genre
entertainment. ... and if this has gotten you at all interested, this movie's currently
streaming on https://www.screambox.com/.
