Kate (Fruzsina Nagy) was just driving along a country road and having a
frustrating phone call with her employer, and suddenly she wakes up in the
middle of a forest, with no idea how she got there and no memory of her
past life - and she's shot dead by some kind of soldier in a gas mask,
only to wake up again in the forest to be shot dead again. The third time
she wakes up though she manages to disarm the soldier who has shot her
dead already twice and shoot him dead in return. Only the soldier has
brought friends who want her dead as well, and she's only saved in the
nick of time by Bubba (Edward Apeagyei), a guy who like her has woken up
in the forest with no memories and no idea how he got here. He helps her
get to a safe place though and gives her pointers as to where to start
digging for her past life. And following his advice, Kate does find pieces
of her past, including her cellphone with photos of her daughter -
however, she's on the constant run from the soldiers in gas masks, who are
told by their mysterious leader (Eric Roberts) via video projection to
kill her before she can remember her former life, as that would lead to
the terminatiion of their whole world. Now Kate doesn't make an easy prey
and has provided with a loaded gun by Bubba, but she's one against many,
with only a handful of bullets ... Sally Kirkland plays a scientist
somehow involved in the whole affair. Aftermath, the
feature remake of the 2020 short of the
same name, is quite a powerful experience, a maze-like film that
really leaves the viewer with only gradually more information as the lead
character, so one is kept guessing really until the very end. And the
movie's rather intelligently structured to keep the audience at the edge
of their seats. And a strong cast, very moody outdoors locations, and a
directorial effort with an emphasis on tension and atmosphere make this
one very worthwhile and slightly surreal thriller.
