Germany in World War II: Captain Craftman (Zach Devereux) is to lead a
small group of Allied soldiers from both the US and the UK - West (Rod
Glenn), Johnson (Jon Kerr), Russo (Andre Pierre), medic Hayman (Taja
Christian) and communications officer Plumb (Matthew Baunsgard) - behind
enemy lines to infiltrate a Nazi research camp and extract Allied spy Hans
(Karl Hughes). The problem here, said lab is to produce Nazi super
soldiers, so it's expected to be heavily guarded - and yet, when our
heroes arrive at the camp, there are no guards at all, what's more, the
whole facility seems to be abandoned even though it's still fully
equipped. Even the radio's still in working order, which makes things easy
for Plumb. It's only eventually that our heroes find a Nazi woman (Kristin
Jaap), but she shows human bitemarks on her body, is apparently
traumatized, urges them to leave and keeps mumbling on about monsters -
and thus they can't really make head or tails of the situation. Further
investigating the lab, our motley crew eventually finds Hans - who's
suddenly attacked out of nowherr by a German who dismembers him and starts
to eat him and is only stopped by a shot in the head. This of course means
the super soldier experiment has somehow gone horribly wrong and has
produced Nazi zombies. And our group of soldiers are the only ones who
stand between them and the outer world, so they have to kill each and
every one of them - not that they have any choice, as their pick-up is
still three hours off ... Rob Capper has a cameo as Adolf Hitler in a
scene that can't be found in any history books. Zombies of
the Third Reich is one of these movies where you get exactly what
you expect - and somehow that's totally ok. Sure, this film doesn't
re-invent the wheel or even go for big surprises (apart from the movie's
historically intentionally inaccurate ending), and that's ok as the film
delivers on its premise, there's plenty of cool zombie action, blood and
guts, and also a fair share of suspence with jump scares at all the right
moments, and the film is populated by a cast of characters that are more
than just cannon fodder, embodied by a solid ensemble. Sure, not a film
for everyone, but if you're into zombies you might want to give this one a
try.
