Carpenter Falls is a small town with a rather tragic history: Not only
did mad man Colin Miller (Nicholas Patten) use it as a stomping ground for
his murder spree (as depicted in 2017's The Wicked One), later also
young Myles (Quentin Malicoat) and Madeline (Remi Deupree) killed their
own parents (Mike Jones, April Reed Jones) in a way reminiscent of
Miller's murders. But of course that's all in the past now, and while the
kids went to jail Miller is believed dead - and survivors of the Miller
ordeal Alex (Katie Stewart) and Adam (Dale Miller) set foot into town for
the first time with their children Daniel (Skyler Guthrie), Jenna (Brandi
Botkin) and young Kendall (Morgan Pyle), to support a concert of Daniel
and his band. But Alex is freaked out from the beginning, and she thinks
she sees the ghost of her best friend Olivia (Sonya Delormier) whom Miller
murdered back when pretty much everywhere, and Olivia seems to warn her.
And after the gig, Daniel and Jenna go off with their friends (Cassidy Rae
Owens, Roman Jossart, Dwayne D. Depp) to party a bit - much to the dismay
of Alex. And she doesn't even know that the kids eventually end up in the
now thought abandoned Miller house, and she doesn't know that now adult
Myles (Jason Crowe) and Madeline (Roni Jonah) have just escaped a prisoner
transport with the help of the masked Wicked One (Richard Leo Hunt)
- who might or might not be Colin Miller -, and the three have decided to
go on a killing spree ... and what better place to start than the old
Miller house? Of course, Alex eventually has a hunch that something's
wrong with her kids, them not being home at two am, but she has her dear
problems to convince the police to help her save her kids - and saving
they sure need, as while all their friends have been slaughtered they have
been kept alive to add some mental to plenty of physical torture ... Now
of course, Wicked Ones has all the hallmarks of a proper slasher
movie, and fans of the genre will not be disappointed for sure, but at the
same time, the film tries (and succeeds) to be more, putting a strong
focus on characters and their relationships, also in relation to the story
at hand, and even affords the killers some traits beyond masked killing
machine - and especially Jason Crowe's almost cartoonish sadist really
puts an interesting spin on things. And that the whole thing's solidly
directed with a feel for suspense, and is carried by a solid cast doesn't
hurt one bit either. And also, this film works perfectly fine if you
haven't seen/weren't even aware of the original The Wicked One
(like me), it's just good genre entertainment.
