A Screambox original: In New York City, documentary filmmaker Tessa (Katrin Nugent) seems to
have just hit gold, having uncovered a big story that really blew up
thanks to her. But that's not only a blessing but also a curse, as
suddenly she finds herself as the defendant in a defamation lawsuit. So
can you blame her for ditching the big city and moving upstate to a
village so sleepy it doesn't have internet or cellphone service - just
perfect when you want to get away from it all. And Tessa's even happy
about the inexplicable 6pm curfew as it ultimately means less
opportunities for people to actually vixit her. That said, it also gives
Tessa way more time completely on her own, and an inquiring mind like hers
is desperate to fill up whis time. So when she stumbles upon a pile of
video and audio tapes left behind by some previous owner, she can't but
take a peek - and discovers some really disturbing content ... Of
course one can't judge an entire series based on its first episode, but
this is a nice set-up for things to come, and told in a weirdly fitting
unexcited yet unsettling way that doesn*t overwhelm the audience but lets
one find one's own way into the mystery at hand. And a suitably subtle yet
atmospheric directorial effort and a relatable centralo performance by
Katrin Nugent just help whetting one's mouth for more.
