Penny (Michelle Macedo) has a few extra pounds on her bones - which is not
to say she's terribly overweight let alone obese mind you, but it's enough
to bother her, especially since she's working aa a touch-up artist at a
photo studio where she's surrounded by models with perfect bodies almost
constantly. So she tries diet after diet (even if she constantly craves
for food) does daily spin classes, but nothing seems to help. And then a
model (Mary Beth Barone) hands her the as of yet untested woinder drug
Thinestra, which works wonders and makes her lose quite some wait over
night to make her look fabulously (and she's now played by Melissa Macdo),
which not only helps her self-confidence but also allows her to eat
whatever she wants, and she feels a constant craving for food. Theree's
just two problems, for one the effect of Thinestra is only temporary and
she eventually goes back to her old weight, also overnight. But the other
problem is, the drug also makes her schizophrenic, and she soon feels a
craving for human flesh, something that those closest to her like her boss
(Brian Huskey), her best friend at the agency (Shannon Dang), her lover
(Gavin Stenhouse) and even her mother (Norma Maldonado) have to painfully
find out ...
Now thematically, Thinestra is more than a little related
to the Demi Moore vehicle The
Substance, what with it also being a horror satire on today's
obsession with beauty and perfection. But that said, storywise
Thinestra sure finds its own voice, a cool blend of the weirdly
funny, the grotesque, the horrific and even the surreal, all placed
straight and in a relatable way and played by a competent cast playing
believable characters. And the outcome is then a pretty unusual but very
worthwhile genre ride. |
