Coming back from the war, Ted (Bob Steele) has to realize that nothing
in his hometown is the way it was, his aunt he lived with has died, his
uncle began drinking, lost all his money at gambling & all of a sudden
left town, his sweetheart has moved to the East, & his horse has been
sold to no-good Kincaid (Harry Semels). Only prospector Si (Gabby Hayes)
is still here & promises Ted to look after him, whether he likes it or
not. Soon the 2 are off to the desert, looking for gold, but instead they
find a corpse, along with a coatbutton & a note telling them that he
was shot from behind by whoever the coatbutton belongs to, & that he was to
look after his young niece June, whom he has never yet met, but who has
noone except for him anymore ...
Soon later, Ted & Si see a mailplane land in the middle of the
desert, & both the pilot & the passenger are shot at ... but when
Ted & Si come to the rescue, the criminals, whoever they were, scram
...
Fortunately neither the pilot Gregg (Slade Hurlbert) nor his passenger,
June (Nancy Drexel) - exactly the June the dead man's letter was about -
are seriously hurt, & with their timely intervention, Ted & Si
have even saved the payroll the plane was carrying. However, to ease
things on June, Si pretends to be her murdered uncle, while Ted & the
Sheriff (William Dyer) make up a plan to bring the criminals to justice,
that involves announcing pilot Gregg's death & Ted becoming the new
pilot to fly payrolls out of town ...
But first, Ted has to win his horse back from Kincaid in a game of
poker, & later defeat him in a horserace. During the horserace,
Kincaid's henchmen try to steal the prizemoney, but Si does not only see
it all & steal the prizemoney back from them, he also finds evidence that
Kincaid is really behind both the assault on the plane & the murder of
June's uncle.
Still they have to catch them redhanded, & to that end,
Ted announces he will fly another payroll out of town, & out in the
desert the Sheriff & Si want to lay a trap for Kincaid & his right
hand man Blake (Francis McDonald) ... things go a bit wrong though when
Si's car breaks down on their way through the desert, while Kincaid &
Blake figure it might be a good idea to take June hostage.
It all ends well though when Ted manages to wrestle down Blake, while
Si - at the site of June's uncle's grave - challenges Kincaid to a fair
& square duel ... & shoots him in the process.
A B-Western, playing like a mystery, but with a horserace & a few
cars & airplanes thrown in to keep things interesting, & moving at
a steady enough pace to keep the audience entertained for roughly under an
hour.
