For the first time after two years of college, Sean (Vasilios Asimakos)
returns to his Massachusetts hometown for the summer, and he even returns to his old job at the local
comicbook store to make some money for his final year, where the owner
Jenkins (Tom O'Donnell) is more than happy to take him back. At first, all
Sean feels how little has moved in town while he has left, most of his
co-workers are still the same, from cynical Eddie (Adam Masnyk) to useless
Patrick (Matthew Berke) to constantly bickering Mike (Mike Brais) and
Frank (David R. Reid), to Nikki (Alyssa Di Rubbo), who has always had -
and still has - a bit of a crush on Sean. Thing is, his co-workers from
back when, who were also his high school friends, aren't exactly glad to
welcome him back, as he's trying for his life to amount to something -
even if that has led to anxiety issues - while they're pretty much stuck
in their lives from back when while seeing other friends from old breaking
away, being because of college or marriage or whatever. This is pretty
much the same reason the "new kid" at the store (Eric Kelly)
gets mobbed to a degree, because he shows initiative and when not working
at the shop tries to advance his career as a filmmaker. But then Sean
meets another "newcomer" to the comicbook store stable, lovely
Lydia (Ana Marie Calise), and for him it's love at first sight, and while
she claims she has a boyfriend, for him she lets her guards down, even
admitting the boyfriend's a lie to prevent co-workers from hitting on her,
and eventually something resembling a romance develops between them - cut
short by Lydia, who knows Sean will leave again at the end of the summer.
And that's while he has found a new love for his hometown and ponders
about dropping out of college just to pursue his options here ... A
rather nice coming of age ensemble piece that despite it's very specific
story seems to touch a nerve with everybody, its overriding theme seeming
universal. And finding the right balance between comedy and drama is
really what makes the film so engaging, and so is a very able cast and a
suitably subtle directorial effort, and the result is a movie that's
pretty much as relatable as it's purely entertaining.
