When a certain Dr Van Gelkder (Morgan Woodward) flees from a nearby
penal colony and asks for exile on the starship Enterprise, captain Kirk
(William Shatner) begins to suspect there is something wrong on the penal
colony, especially since Van Gelder on one hand seems to be totally out of
it, on the other seems to talk reason. So Kirk and pretty medical officer
Doc Helen (Marianna Hill) beam down to see what's going on.
They are warmly welcomed by the prison's head Doc Adams (James
Gregory), who readily shows them around ... but exactly one object Adams
refers to as aborted experiment, a brainwashing machine, catches Kirk's
eye ... and at night, Kirk persuades Helen to help him experiment witht he
machine a little. And indeed, the brainwashing machine turns out to be
working just fine - which is probably while all the prisoners in the
colony have their incredibly empty looks. Of course, Kirk and Helen are
caught by Doc Adams, and soon enough, Adams tries to brainwash Kirk,
convincing him that he has an affair with Helen (why he doesn't use his
brainwashing machine for anything more useful is left at anybody's guess),
but ultimately, Kirk uses his trademark two-fisted approach to set a few
wrongs right, and when the rescue team beams down to the planet, they find
Kirk passionately kissing Helen - hey, he thinks they are having an
affair, remember. Doc Adams meanwhile was left behind in his brainwashing
room where he took full force of his device, but without any suggestion -
which emptied his brains and killed him.
So-so episode. The story is rather silly, but if you like the series as
such, you might tend to like this one too.
