She's (Ali Dusinberre) a streetwalker out of need for money, but that
said, she doesn't mind her job too much - after all, it's just sex in
exchange for a financial transaction. That doesn't mean her heart isn't in
the right place, like when she refuses to take a college boy's virginity
(Cameron Mysliwicz) to not disillusion him even though his money's good.
This is much to the dismay of her pimp Skinny (Kris Salvi). who doesn't
like to miss out on any "business opportunity" - so in exchange,
he cheats her out of her money for a whole night, which in change prompts
her to quit. That said, being an out-of-job prostitute, there's nowhere to
go, really - unless she decides to go there guns blazing ...
In many aspects, Sloppy Sunday is very much reminiscent
of 1970s grindhouse cinema, and the film's inherent grittiness as
well as its 70s style funk and soul soundtrack seem to only emphasize on
this. Thing is, this movie as a whole is anything but a paint-by-numbers
job as similarities with these movies of old, beloved as they might be,
stop at a surface level, as the movie ditches the genre#'s sleazy elements
and inherent machismo for an interesting narrative arc that goes hand in
hand with the lead character's character arc, gets one emotionally
invested into the action rather than just blown away by the action
setpiece that makes the finale of this movie. And a suitably subtle
directorial effort and a very solid cast only help to make this one pretty
cool and very worthwhile short.
