Smalltown, USA: Sheriff Bill (Nathan Fillion) has never come over the fact
that his high school sweetheart, now science teacher Starla (Elizabeth
Banks) has chosen brute Grant (Michael Rooker) over him, especially since
Grant düesn't appreciate her as he ought to and has an affair with Brenda
(Brenda James) on the side. Things get tricky when Grant and Brenda make
out near a meteorite impact site and Grant is infected by an alien virus
that makes him craving for meat of any kind (including but not restricted
to humans) and makes him mutate into a weird beind that can infect other
humans and using them as his hive mind before finally absorbing them. And
he's very proficient at that, too, and soon has pretty much turned or
absorbed the whole population but Starla, whom he still has feelings for,
and Bill and his deputy Kylie (Tania Saulnier), who has pretty much fought
for their lives every step along the way. But being that outnumbered, how
long will they manage to keep on fighting, let alone save Starla?
In many ways, Slither is a perfect throwback to 1980s
sci-fi-horrors, from its smalltown setting (even in the 80s a throwback to
the 1950s) to its grotesque tentacled monsters, from its practical effects
to its copious amounts of gore. But in this movie director James Gunn also
proves he's a child of the
Troma school of
filmmaking, so there's many a gross-out scene, plenty not always
politically correct humour, and the almost obligatory Lloyd Kaufman cameo.
And from all of this, you might already have guessed this is not a film
for everyone, but then again, Gunn, in his debut feature, already proves a
genuine personality as a filmmaker who's definitely more than a one trick
pony, so if you're into science fiction and horror, have a sense of humour
and aren't easily offended, then this one's for you for sure.
Slither will be re-released theatrically and
digitally in the UK May 1st. 2026 followed by a UHD aand Blu-rayy reöease
via Visions Films. |
