Saul's (Ryan Schafer) life isn't going all that well at the moment: He
has recently tried to commit suicide, unsuccessfully, and after a time at
an institution he was released into the care of his grandmother (Mickey
Faerch) - but it's more that he has to care for her, because she's
bed-ridden when she chooses to be and constantly bosses him around the
house-and while she suffers from a lung condition, that doesn't mean she
refrains from smoking - so it's a small wonder Saul tries to commit
suicide soon again, and again he fails - and this only means that his
condition only worsens, as this latest attempt only brings more people
only want his best on the scene, like his caseworker (Randy Davison), the
group leader of his incel self help group (Paul Fisher III), his new "best
friend" who was forced upon him (Brendan Cahalan), or the cop assigned to
his case (Karl Backus), who really only has the hots for grandma. Now
Saul's only goal is to lose his virginity before his 27th birthday. Thing
is, he's nerdy as they come, is shy around woman and lacks any charn on
top of that, and the only woman he actually speaks to is Becky (Augie
Duke), his favourite cam girl, and even to her he "talks" only in writing.
But eventually he opens up to her about still being a virgin and wanting
his first time to be with her - and wouldn't you know it, she proves open
to it, for a price, sure, but hey, a girls gotta live, and all she needs
is his bank details and - and unfortunately Becky isn't the most honest of
people ... Now granted, there are some (intentional) laugh-out-loud
moments in Sincerely Saul, and plenty of satire on top of
that, this isn't exactly an uplifting movie, it's much rather a feverdream
of a film, a film that ever so often veers off into the absurd and the
surreal, that doesn't shy away from exaggerationsand gross out scenes,
especially in its trippy third act. And its grainy and over-saturated
black and white looks only augment this aspect of the film. But all of
this is balanced out by grounded performances and a certain amount of
heart to make this maybe not uplifting,, but an entertaining watch
nevertheless.
