Elliot (West Liang) and Greta (Amy Tsang) both find themselves stranded
at a run-down desert motel, and since nobody else is really taking notice
of them they strike a friendship. Of course, they both have a motive to
being there, Elliot is on the way to his estranged wife to reconcile,
Greta is on a quest to find her husband Patrick (Max Faugno). And here's
where things get strange, as Greta's actually the splitting image of
Elliot's wife, while Greta travels with an android that shares her
husband's features. And she has actually picked that exact desert motel
because it's near to a portal to "the other side", because
Patrick has actually killed himself, and she figures herself partly
responsible for his suicide. Now in principle, Elliot agrees to help Greta
in passing over, but there's still a meeting with gatekeeper Amanda
(Chandra Anderson) on the horizon, and she sure is a treacherous one ... Now
this sure is an unusual film if there ever was one, a blend of science
fiction and metaphysical horror, but done in a very low-key way with hints
of both surrealism and neo-noir. As a result, the film's not always easy
to follow and deceives its audience more than once, but it's a bit like a
puzzle that gets more fascinating the longer it goes on. And a stylish
directorial effort and very solid cast sure help in making this a pretty
unique cinematic trip.
