Estranged siblings Dustin (Daniel Burns), Beth (Kellie Spill) and Emma
(Lauren Pisano) pay a visit to their even more estranged but now deceased
dad's (Bart Shattuck) cabin in the woods to figure out what to9 do with it
- now Emma wants to sell and Dustin wants to turn it into an AirBnB - and
interestingly both for the same reason, because they've lost their jobs,
but they just define "opportunity" dirferently. Beth is town between the
two of them as she actually holds a job and her future does not depend on
what happens to the cabin. Now this situation in itself is of course
difficult enough as it is, but it's only getting more complicated when the
siblings learn their father might have taken his own life, and a ghostly
presence, Suzanne (Angie Moon Conte), original owner of the house, had her
hands in his demise. Things eventually get to a tipping point when all
three have ghostly apparitions of dad or Suzanne or both, apparitions
designed to drive them to suicide ...
Now here's an unusual piece of horror cinema, so unusual in fact that
doesn't even feel like a horror film at the longest time, but that said,
when the horror does set in it feels organically ingrained into the story.
But really, when it starts out the film feels more like a character piece
with sibling rivalry at its center - and it works really well, too, thanks
to a very clever and also compelling script that doesn't veer off into
straight drama but grants the audience some comical mements as well. And
of course, the three leads turning in flawless performances help to bring
this to life. And then when the horror sets in properly, it really goes
with and even extends everything that happened before, making this a very
unusual but utterly enjoyable piece of genre cinema.
